Two people were killed as suspected rival leaders of the confraternities of Aiye and Eiye clashed on Alhaji Qudus Giwa Street near the filling station of Oando in the Lagos region of Ikorodu.
According to Punch, the cult clash also left many others injured.
Police rescued one of the bodies after the altercation, according to an eyewitness.
The eyewitnesses said the residents didn’t know what caused the battle because it was so sudden that many of them, who came back from work and markets, were wounded.
One of the area’s residents, simply identified as Emmanuel, confirmed the clash between members of the confraternities of Aiye and Eiye.Emmanuel lamented that Ikorodu’s cults were so frequent that the area’s residents were no longer safe.
Another eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Ayo, said, “I don’t know what led to their fight. Cult clashes in Ikorodu seem to be endless. The police themselves are worried about the frequent cult-related clashes and killings in Ikorodu.
“As the police succeed in quelling a particular clash, three or four others will surface within 24 hours. Nobody can actually tell what they have been fighting for. I think this is beyond the supremacy stuff.”
A trader, who simply identified herself as Otolorin, said the area’s backwardness had resulted in the senseless killings and destruction of property.
In addition to the clashes, the hoodlums often rob items worth millions of naira during the crisis, according to Otolorin.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bala Elkana, said he would confirm the clash with the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the district, but Punch confirmed that he still had to do so when this story was filed.
